Mud Flaps - Rear

Postby Krutch on Sat, 13 Jul 2013 7:18 +0000

Hi Guys,

Require a bit of help/insight and suggestions on making and fitting some rear mud flaps.
running 3" lift and 2"body/tray lift.
Mud flaps are to be used in conjunction with a alloy tray and 33's. (currently just has standard steel guards that keep scrubbing out)

I have a rough idea of what i need to do, but any insight and or photos would greatly help.
Flaps to be completely flexible.

one thing, do i have/need (by law) to run a flap infront of the rear wheel???

cheers

Well, as there's been no replies or suggestions, I thought that i 'wing it' and make it up as it goes.
Below is a build outline for rear flexi mud flaps.
I'm not going to post heaps of literature, pictures talk for themselves.

Firstly, remove existing factory steel mudflaps.
Cut and remove 1 of the body/tray mounts off the chassis, as it is well in the way.

Then grind back to smooth surface and clean with thinners, ready for paint.

Fabricate a top bracket to mount and secure the rubber flap material from. To suit your tray.

Image

Then fabricate a plate to 'hold' the rubber flap.

Dummy mount:

*You will notice, all materials and fitting are 304 stainless. Easy to work with clean.

The bolts used for the 'hold' plate are 3 x M6x16

Next step is to find the position for the plate that will suspend the flaps via chain(s).
You will have to dummy fit the flaps and work this out, based on tyre size, aesthetics and so forth.
Once you have found position, fabricate a plate and weld chain(s) on.

The last 2 pics demonstrate the use of a pickling paste on all welds. Works well.

Next, fabricate a bottom plate.
This may not be required, but i wanted to attach the genuine Toyota flaps at the bottom.

Now, set your desired chain length to make 'arch' and secure.
I secured my chains with a M5x16 bolt through the link of each to the underside of the tray.

I ran out of sunlight, so will post a pic of the ute with them on over the next few days.

Hope this helps if anyone is contaminating doing this.

Regards

It's time for me to do the same.. I have already had a warning about mudflaps being too high off the ground.

yeah legally your mudflaps need to be the same height as the bottom of your rear axles.. otherwise you could be booked.

(at least thats what it is here in VIC)..

I thought it had to cover at least half your tyre?

Well that would work out as roughly half.

Come up great.

Something to consider.. I have my chains mounted to the tray/tub using snap hooks. This way when I'm off road, I can tighten them up a heap and pull the flaps out of the way. Preventing them from ripping off
