D4D lux is struggling to start // cleaning the starter motor

Hey Guys.

Before i start - search wasn't my friend in this case. but maybe Im just forum illiterate

The Problem:
For the last couple of weeks my 06 Diesel is having trouble starting.
When i turn the key sometimes nothing happens..
It either takes a couple of seconds which isn't usual or it takes a couple more turns to start up

Possible Reasons:
After checking a section of water ruts, one decided it didn't like the weight of my car, all of the sudden the car just sunk nose first - I was stuck there too long and the whole car flooded.
I think it was a build up of bark and leaves and stuff so when i checked it it didn't seem so deep.
Moral of the story.. never rely on a patrol to pull you out :D

I stripped the whole car. Changed all Diff, transfer, engine oil. Re greased everything etc.

- Then i replaced my stereo amplifier that got wet ( thought this could be draining the battery)

Image

- I got my battery checked and it was fine.

The only other thing i could think of is the starter motor.
Im going to pull it apart this weekend and fingers crossed there is no mud in it.

The Car never doesn't start.
It always kicks over after a maximum third turn of the key.
and when it starts it runs perfectly fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks Heaps

Ouch, could have been worse!

Yeah must be the starter solenoid full of crap, I have had that issue with my 80 series, cleaned it all out and all was fine afterwards as sometimes it took about 10 turns of the key before it would crank.

You didn't do this on the powerlines track did you ?

Good luck!

Ah Dave im not even going to go into where i found water...

It was the powerline track, you know near the end where you start driving along the fence of the farm.
Theres that little 4WD fun section with all those water ruts everywhere.
It was in there.
It was about the 12th rut i did and unlike the other ones it just sunk.

Is there anything special you used to clean it out with Dave?

- Troy and doubleshot, it doesn't make any clicking there is no noise at all.
This morning i turned it once and held it down to see what would happen and sure enough it just kicked over 3 seconds after i turned the key.

so three seconds of silience then it just started as it would normally.

( Troy you should of bought a Yamaha  )

Seb,
Its the solinoid. I had the same issue with a bit of water a few years back. A bit of mud get in the solinoid and nothiong happens. Then after a few seconds away it goes. Just pull the starter out, from memory a couple of philips heads hold the cap on the end. give it a good clean. dont spray and wd40 or anything in it. Should just be clean and dry when you refit it. All will be good after that.

Cam that’s great mate.
Taking it down to the in laws farm this weekend so I’ll put it over the pit and it should be nice and easy to rip apart.
Hopefully that solves the problem.
I'll let you know how i go thanks again.

Troy i used to have an 05 steel frame yz450f 4 speed.
It use to hammer, had no issues with it.
Upgraded to a yz450f 2009 model.
The upgrade was amazing.

Currently in the process of making a metal box like contraption which when i go on long trips will enclose the tub with the tail down.

Means i can have the bike in the back with generator / esky / swag / riding gear etc all in the back without having to worry if my $9.00 net is going to keep it in.
If you’re interested I’ll keep you updated??

Thanks again guys.

You actually can use something to wash and clean the solenoid out, it's an electrical contact cleaner which usually comes in a pressure pack can and is available from electrical wholesalers, Dick Smith shops and some auto shops.
I had a solenoid on a fj40 Cruiser, that had the same issue, and once it was cleaned with contact cleaner, I never had any more issues with it.

Cheers, Mat

sounds like a awsome setup ya gonna have for the lux yeah keep us informed and take some pics.
one of the reasons the yam used to always have gearbox problems was because the way they used to anneal the gears in the gearbox they were brittle supposedly on the newer ones they have fixed the problem. do they still use 5 titanium valves?

Also back then when i had the yam i was racing enduros alot so the bike always coped a flogging my ktm has only done 2 enduros so it still looks like new lol

cheers Troy

Why not kill 2 birds with one stone and just buy the MAF Sensor cleaner and use that for both.

BRT,
You are right, contact cleaner is fine, what ever you use need to evaperate and not leave a residue like WD40 or the like.

Regards,
Cam

Yeah my bike was the SE white model.
And cause a lot of my riding now is south east wa its just red dirt.
so now my plastics are a kind of brown colour. hahaha : )
I have the original ones which are brand new if i ever go to sell it -

Yeah my bike was the last bike they brought out with the 5 valves.
The new 2010 450 changed to 4 valves
I wouldn't mind getting a 2010 but i was going to wait till they fix everything
First time with 4 valves and fuel injection -

Might buy a KTM so i don’t have to kick all the time
hahahahaha

Yeah the box will be made from aluminium.
still trying to figure it all out but maybe if i make some rocksliders
i can get everything powder coated black

Thanks every one for helping me out
Pulled apart the starter motor and cleaned it all out
Car is starting lovely - No problems at all.

did have to take the bash plate off and get in there up under the car.
Used a rattle gun to get the bolts off
and used lock tight when they were done back up

should of got more photos when under the car but was a bit pre occupied.

let me know if you need to know more!!

pretty filthy
Image

Used Zenox electrical contact cleaner to clean everything out.
Used quite a lot and then used the air gun to make sure it had all evaporated.
Image

Connection was pretty black
Image

Used a wire sander to clean it up

All put back together.

That Makes a bit more sense now.

I started to get this issue lately, Battery is fine, come to start the car but it doesn't turn over.

After a few turns of the key it starts.

It got me worried.

Thanks
