Snorkel Install Guide

Found these 2 holes while I was sealing up everything during my snorkel install on my V6 .. There was also one on the intake pipe but it had a rubber seal like the one on the bottom of the diesel air box. . Looked in pretty good shape so I left it

Thanks to the OP. Very helpful.

I have done one myself many years ago and the peace of mind that comes from knowing it was done properly and carefully is worth as much as the $ saving. My current lux doesn't have one, but perhaps this thread might get off my blot to fit one.

It is definitely not hard if you take your time and are careful.

Of course if you have ten thumbs and can break a cannonball, paying for insto might be smarter

Snorkel Install Guide

Postby 1tuff4b on Sat, 29 Mar 2014 8:05 +0000

I had a safari snorkel fitted a month or so ago by and ARB agent and I find that the snorkel head from the pillar mount upwards vibrates (shakes violently from left to right) a fair amount at idle. Is this normal or does it happen on anyone else's lux? I've never had the problem on any of my other trucks wether fitted by someone or myself. All the fittings are tight and if you raise the rpm to around 900 the vibration goes away
Cheers

That doesn't sound good at all - I'd like to see a video of that though
The ram head must be the incorrect size or no hose clamp/ring fastener used.

Hey matey, thanks for the extensive write up. I used your guide today to install my own safari snorkel on my 2008 hilux. Your pictures were very useful and it went fairly smoothly (for the most part haha). I ended up cutting the large hole with a Dremel tool using a protractor-style jig that it came with.

I also noticed that nipple/valve on the bottom of the air box looks a bit deformed like yours as well. I decided against doing anything with it, because I believe that the whole idea of it is that it closes over once vacuum pressure is applied, ie when the engine is running.

Either way, nice write up and kudos for the detailed instructions/pics!

Nice one! Would be interested to see what that looks like. Chuck up some pics if you have any.

Thanks OP for posting this and giving me the confidence to tackle it myself.

Beejayzus what a PITA (if you can't get to the rear of them) those square plugs are that clip the plastic inner guard in! Before I started, due to your advice, I tried to get some plugs from Repco and Supercheap but they had nothing to suit. I continued anyway and left the last few in near the sill panel and bent the plastic panel away to get inside the guard, this caused other issues...

Like you said, that last nut up the top closest to the windscreen sure is hard to get ones hand in to. I dropped a nut and it hit the plastic inner guard and rolled down between it and the sill. I put a socket on the next nut to help me grip them, then I dropped both and they joined the previous nut. I was then forced to mash another plug to be able to poke my finger in (whilst losing a layer or two of skin) to retrieve the two nuts and the socket.

$90 (delivered) snorkel from eBay, great quality, self install = winning.
Sweating so much in the hot sun that I had to take my crocs off as they were filling with perspiration, bark off a few fingers, several trips into town for bits and pieces, a new holesaw (and another arbor as the one I had would not fit!), a few mashed plastic plugs, most of the day in total, quite a few swear words = priceless.
If it aint half off, it aint on sale!

Thanks for the write up. I got my snorkel today and will be fitting it next week. I would have done it anyway but seeing it done helps a lot. I got this snorkel looks just like the ironman one and was pretty cheap. http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/380717233407?nav=SEARCH

I have a template you can have. Mine isn't a safari but i think its the same. I got halfway through fitting mine today and sliced my hand open and had to visit the hospital.

Got it finished, even with a sore hand. Took a few Hrs but is fairly easy, hardest part is building up the courage to drill the first hole.

What are the chances of removing the grommets/clips for the splash guard without removing the flare? I've got an SR that just had Utemart flares fitted. I think there are about five grommets that have been screwed into to secure the flare to the vehicle (plus the tape on the flare itself). That lip is probably covering a few more grommets too.

Not keen on removing the entire flare to fit the snorkel as I'd probably have to buy another :( But I'm keen to break those clips as I have plenty of spares at home. Any chance? If not, my birthday's coming up in under a fortnight...:)
Check out Slain's Overlander, a perpetual work-in-progress.

It is possible to fit a snorkel without removing the inner guard completely. If ya get all but those ones along the edge of the flare ya can pull the guard down enough to get ya arm in there. It's a bitch but possible!
