Is it only me.. why do all the diesel hilux's rattle so when cold..

Compared to the landcruisers etc which make no noise at all when cold..

how can you tell if you've got too much noise to warrant concern ? whats normal ?

I have noticed my D4D rattles a bit extra for about the first 30 Secs when I start to drive, even after I warm it up for 2 minutes. I just accept it as the diesel clatter.

Yeah they all clatter when cold, never known an engine to be like that before... and most of my previous motors were diesels too!

I've heard it's to do adjustment of the timing. There's something in the downloaded manual I was reading the other day, can't remember the name they called it but not all countrys have the same.

Yep, just lately, I've noticed my lux rattling more than normal, I was starting to think that maybe it needs seeing to! But it's 4,000 offf it's next service. The weather is starting to cool down a bit I suppose, but it didn't rattle like now this time last year.

Yep I also have the rattle and have put it down to the direct injection as Roly has said.
I also have a reasonable amopunt of noise which sounds like a leaking exhast maifold coming into the cab of the vehicle from the pass side. I am unsure if this is just because it is a SR with minimul sound proofing. ie no carpets. Anyone else notice this?

My Father has a Hilux SR TD as well and his is definately noisier than my SR5.. I thought it was sound deadening as well, but we did a test from cold straight up the hill from my house, my SR5 only 'rattled' for about 10secs under load, and his SR 'rattled' for about 40secs under same sorta load.. he's a bit concerned about the extended noise his is making..

All the direct injected engines seem to do it. My neighbour drives a Pajero and I hear it rattling up the road when he first cranks up. I'd be interested in hearing the reason though.

Anyone ever get to the bottom of this? I have noticed that mine is considerably noiser the past couple of days when it has been a bit cooler. Goes away after a few minutes when warm though.
Would be intereste dto know what it is.

Mine does it as well, ever since new.

Despite overall improvements in diesel engine noise and vibration, certain aspects of diesel engines continue to present significant challenges. One such issue is the presence of diesel knocking that is prevalent during cold start and warm-up conditions.

Its normal guys dont be concerned

Further to this , the cause of the noise is something to do with the cold air being compressed in the cold chamber, as the chamber warms the noise is reduced.

My dealer put it down to the Common Rail causing the noise.

Mine the same at least there's quite a few of us make me feel better now

mate i think it comes with the territory the all don't like being cold .
if ur worried about let it idle for a few mins it will help the rattles

I noticed after starting my vehicle in this cold weather, when I engage the clutch, the rattle dissipates ALOT! After the vehicle warms up, like 3 - 5 mins, one disengages the clutch the rattle in my vehicle is no longer present.

Ive resorted to using the PWR heater when i start and let it idle (at the higher revs) for about 30secs first.. then take off.. i go straight up a big hill and i 'rattle' then for about a second before it clears up..

Glad i came across this site, ever since the weather got colder the rattle has increased quite a bit BUT only for the first 2 minutes or so then it quitens down considerable. I thought i had a problem.

With such a high tech engine and the amount of tolerances they now tune its not uncommon. The direct injection contributes but as has been said, its standard. Just start em up and drive sheepishly for the first minute.... then go for it... same goes for most motors really. I race go karts and they are similar depending on the type of motor you have... they are all tuned for peak performance at operating temp....

Would also depend alot on the oil... the thicker it is when cold will make the sound louder..

Was told by a mate of mine whom is a graet mechanic that the rattle is the new injection system but also the new deisels now have forged pistons to cope with the increased power and compresion so until they warm up they slap around abit.
