The cold 'rattles'

Turbo, Manifolds, Exhaust, Intercooler, Internals etc

Hey guys,
Have you noticed that with the warmer weather the noise at start up is no where near as bas as it was during winter. I've noticed it.

also.. soon after new oil its not as bad too.. AND.. check your fuel filters..

(Im now replacing mine every 10k as well).. we found that replacing the fuel filter and cleaning any 'gunge' out made a huge difference on my fathers lux..

Steve9R -> With the filter.... what change did it make.... This is the wrong thread for it but I think either my economy is getting slightly worse or my foot heavier....

Hey Jeff..

In my Fathers 05 lux it made a HUGE difference.. the lower section of his filter box was full of dirt and crap and the filter was black all over (30k) compared to mine (20k) which was half clean / half black..

main difference between us is that he did a big overland trip and had to get diesel at some dodgey places..

his lux was rattling really bad compared to mine.. he'd had it in at toyota a couple of times to check it, (nothing wrong.. they all do it).. then a diesel mechanic who services it looked at it and said there was a fuel issue which prompted him to look at the filter etc... it hasnt totally removed the rattle.. but its a lot better.. so we both now change them every 10k.. for $30ish.. its cheap insurance..

Hmmm...... didn't know that the rattle when the engine is cold can be reduced if the fuel filter is dirty.

Cheers

If you run a lower weight oil during winter the rattles will reduce.

I changed from the 15W 40 to 5w 40, it made a big difference, much more pleasant to drive during the cold

Mine is approx 8weeks old and now has about 2900kms on it. It rattles a bit when cold for the first couple of minutes but then fades away - pretty normal I would have thought. I'm pretty keen to now get the first service done. This is another thing that has annoyed me about my dealer - the rep told me to get the first service done at 5000km and the windscreen sticker says the same. When recently contacting the service dept, they said shit no - they prefer to do it at 1500km - 2000km. Grouse! I've recently received the Toyota Cust survey but I'm waiting to see how the first service goes before I fill it out and send it off. We haven't got off to the greatest of starts....

Otherwise, now with 2900kms on it, it's really starting to pull like a train. I holds 5th gear up hills that mates with other 4wds struggle with. A good donk, these D4D's!!

Yeah I agree Brett.. also depends on where you store it (garage vs carport vs open air)..

I ran 15/40 in mine all winter and my 'cold rattle' was about 5secs before it stopped.. Stored in a locked garage in melb.. but im sure if left out in the open/cold all night (weve been done to 1c here).. would have big consequences.. and a lighter oil would definately help then IMHO..

With winter fast approaching here in the uk my 5000m old Hilux is really starting to rattle when cold, spoke to the dealer, he says he will fit new injectors when they come off backorder, will let you know if they sort it out.;)

Hi v8victor,

Uteracer - the first 'service' is around 1000 - 1500km and it's just a quick check they don't even change the oil! The first 'proper' service is at 5000km which include oil / filter change etc.

cheers

Greg

Have noticed mine has been rattling away but not as loud, when it's properly warmed up, when you idle down the streets at 60km/h you can hear it... when you open it up half throttle it's gone but when you fully open up the throttle you can hear it rattle away a little bit.... is this normal with everyone else's Hiluxes?

I've got 3000km on the ute now and around 2500rpm seems to be the worst! It comes and goes and even at steady 110kmph (2500) you can still here it.

She goes in for her first full service soon so will make mention of the fact then and see what 'they' say. I'm prepared for the service managers speil....

Hi guys,
My Hilux also started the cold rattles a while ago, around the beginning of winter. After reading this thread, and not being very experienced with diesels, I thought it was normal. The rattle seemed to be worst around the 2000rpm mark and at first lasted around 2-3 mins. The rattle became gradually worse, and now lasts for quite a long time ~5-10min, so I wanted clarification.

I took it into Toyota one night and left it in the workshop. We started it the next morning with the datalogger connected and recording. On startup the tech guys immediately tell me this isn't normal. This isn't the first time they've seen it in either. Apparently the flow rate through one injector was very low, and it's pair was conpensating and pumping in much more.
The data has been sent off to Toyota, and 2 new injectors will be fitted under warranty.

So far the car has been in the workshop for a week, and it looks like it could be another week until the injectors arrive.
My concern is - what is stopping this happening again? This is a new car, standard engine/fuel system, 6 months old and only 8000km.

Just thought I'd let you know about my experience with the cold rattles. Hope yours is better.

I have been watching these threads come and go on the loud noise our diesels make on cold start.
Mine definitely produces more noise than it should, and I am planning to raise the issue next service and have the problem rectified.
I also would be interested if anybody has had any feedback on why this is a problem, and why it won't happen again after injectors are replaced. Is this a fuel impurity problem or something?

Anyhow, I still love my Toyota and wouldn't have any other ute :D

Sam.
