ProVent 200 crankcase filter. Experiences??

Postby Cruiserdog on Mon, 15 Jul 2013 3:35 +0000

Have been looking at the the ProVent 200 crankcase ventilation filter, essentially a catch can, and wondering if its worth it. I've got a Mar 05 1kd-ftv with a little blow by ( nothing outrageous) and thinking this may be beneficial to slow build up in the egr??? Thoughts???

Okay found a thread with this in it, don't know why the search function didn't bring it up but anyway, apologies.

Some love them and others including Toyota think they're a waste of money.

They can cause problems but most people don't notice them. With the 2005 you are better off blocking the EGR.
I might be wrong.

Yeh I am contemplating taking mine off on my 2020. Cant say it has any benefits, but costs me $80 for a new filter now and again...

Of course Toyota don't like them they don't get the work in there work shops to clean EGRS.
My take out a heap of condensation. Leave the filter in for at least 40 thousand k they work better when they look dirty.

Personally I am a fan of fitting one to a turbo engine of any description, particularly a diesel with EGR. I currently don't have one fitted to any of my cars, but none of them are diesels. I did have one fitted to my diesel Patrol and it worked well, but I went the extra mile and had it returning the oil to the sump after turning the engine off, rather than having to regularly empty it. On the Nissan this was easy to do, but not sure how you would do it on a Hilux. I found that after fitting the Provent and blocking the EGR, the engine oil stayed relatively honey colored for the 10K service intervals and didn't use any oil, while before doing it the oil would be black in a few km.

..I have it fitted on my Hilux since the beginning. I have now 35000 km on it and empty it from time to time. All what comes out actually is water, no oil although the filter itself is oily.

OK, I have a 20 year old naturally aspirated diesel Hilux with over 350 thou' on it.
Would it be likely I'd get good benefits from fitting one of these?

Don't waste your money Rob, yours doesn't have the pollution crap that's on later models. Its got this far without one... Just keep up with the oil and filter changes.

I have a brand new never fitted genuine provent 200 if anyone wants to buy it... Make a offer ;) just don't buy the Chinese knock-off imitation for $100
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.
