Chipped Diesel VS Petrol V6

Postby bennyboy on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 2:26 +0000

Hi all, first time poster here. I'm looking at getting a new hilux, but am still undecided between diesel or petrol. I'm interested to know what a chipped diesel is like, powerwise, in comparison to the V6 petrol?

I've driven both standard, but haven't driven a chipped diesel, so any help or advice here is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading and hopefully adding your valuable comments!

Regards,
Ben.

Ben,
I can only give you a comparison over the 1/4 mile. There is 1/2 a second between a chipped diesel and a v6. The v6 being quicker. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Cam, that's suprisingly close. As a point of interest, what were the times for the 1/4 mile?

Ian please help,
From memory it was around a 16.9 sec for the v6 and about 17.4 for the diesel with TTE chip. Could stand corrected as this is a few years ago. The tiapan ute (manual) did do a 16.9 ish for a diesel I think. Both our utes were auto's (the v6 and mine).

It would be in a past post, have to do a search.

I reckon with a bit of work the chipped diesel would find that extra half second. Cam's TTE chip is a one size fits all so there is no addiitonal power settings on it.

You'd need to add a freeflowing exhaust (eg Beaudesert or Taipan) with dump pipe and a water to air intercooler. Then with the right chip, you could up the power and torque settings. If you didn't make it to the finish line first, adding a boost cut defeater to allow the boost to go up from 15 to to 20 psi would probably leave the petrol for dead. Of course, you have just spent a fair bit of $ on this, but achieving the same percentage increase (we are talking close to 50% increase) on a petrol would cost more I think!

Thanks for the tips guys. Hard one as the deisel is already more expensive than the petrol off the shelf, and I'm guessing that for an exhaust plus a chip you'd get no change in under probably $4k which increases the price differential further.

I hate to say it, but maybe the wise decision is the petrol and to use the saved money to purchase some nice ARB gear (lockers, barwork etc)....

Thanks for the replies gents.

Not that much mate. Chips from forum sponsors like VMN are under $1k and the Beaudesert Exhaust through VMN is $1135 plus shipping. You could do it for a little over $2k.

An exhaust system from Beaudesert Exhausts for the V6 including extractors is $1665 plus delivery so by the time you add some power enhancements to the V6 equivalent to what is suggested in this thread for the Diesel, you will spend a lot more.

In all honesty, the diesel drives surprisingly well straight out of the box, the modern common rails are nothing like the old oil burners! I think it is just going up on tyre sizes that has an impact on all of them.

Having said that, if you really are a petrol head, you will never be satisifed with the diesel... If you do any offroad touring, V6 fuel consumption will soar when compared with the diesel.

As Rockit, Jogal and Boof said, if you want speed go the v6. If you want a little less speed and fuel ecconomy go the diesel. V6 goes well but shit they chew the fuel. You will never get the performance of a v6 out of a diesel but you will also never get the economy of a diesel out of a v6.

Your choice.

50/50 I think.

Yeah, it is a tough decision. I used to own the previous model SR5 3.4l V6, not much performance in that sucker and that ate the fuel too. Now if only the hilux had the TDV8 that the 200 has....

... which is not nearly as reliable as the 4 Cyl D4D :P :P :P

There was a very interesting article in 4WD Action a while ago where they took 2 Kia Sorrentos accross the Simpson. One was Diesel and the other was Petrol and they looked at fuel consumption. It made my mind up that diesel was the way to go if you are going to engage 4WD.

Wat I think is.........

1] the world revolves around diesel.
2] yes u pay more for diesel out of the box, but worth more when u upgrade or sell.
3] fuel economy,
4] 4wding better in diesel
5] chip the diesel and u will beat a petrol in a race ( 0 to 140kmh) (vmn chip)
6] u got torque down low in the revz
7] if u want a power house DONT GET A 4WD

Mate get a diesel and don't even hesitate.

i think vmn got it right. if your a petrol head you cant have a diesel and vice versa. as for having to mod something to get it to go faster i think you only invest so much and stop or your just over capitalising. chip and exhaust for diesel and exhaust for petrol. it is sensible to consider your situation money wise cos its not worth having a v6 if you cant afford to do a decent trip in it. around 400klm to every $90 odd bucks.

I have both petrol and diesel hilux's....Diesel is chipped and exhaust, the V6 is standard and to be honest there is no way the diesel is near as fast as the petrol. Wack an exhaust on the V6 and the gap will just get wider, fuel wise not to different till ya put a load on them!

I know many will disagree but diesels are not built to be revved or run high boost, yes the newer ones are better than the old ones. BUT how many new chipped and boosted 4cyl diesels have proven sttrength and reliability over time.

There are none that I know of at this stage, if they last 5-600,000kms like the old ones good stuff personally I dont see it happening. The newer petrol engines will have the same life imo and are cheaper to repair when they do go. Obviously none of this matters if you turn your car over every 3-4 years, but given the money we throw at 4wds and with new ones getting softer and softer I personally dont see the point. If I did remote touring then diesel may well come into my head but until then petrol on gas gives me the best of both worlds. Cheap to run and plent of power to boot 8-)
