Petrol vs diesel???????????

Postby twinturbo007 on Sat, 17 Jan 2009 7:21 +0000

HI
New user who wants to buy an SR-5, but petrol or diesel?
would like to know both users experience, leaning a little towards petrol due to lpg, any comments appreciated.
Usage is semi rural but unlikely to get offroad much.
regards
Brenton

Brenton
i went V6 as i wanted the extra power as i use mainly as work car with occasional trips away. If i was to tour Aus i would go diesel for fuel economy.Mine is returning 16l/100km town or highway it's the same, as its a SR with no ADD. Gotta put fuel in anything you buy i reckon. The SR5 V6 will return a slightly better fuel economy.Haven't even considered LPG because of sheer cost , quoted $5000 to convert to LPG and then the rear tyre is relocated to either tray (not an option for dual cab) or extra cost of rear wheel swing away carrier.
P.S i love it

I love my diesel. Get 11l per 100km towing a 800kg trailer every day and driving at the speed limits.
The diesel manual also has the lowest low range gearing but bear in mind the diesel auto has the highest and only 4 gears.
Possibly cheaper to service a diesel, no spark plugs.
Cheaper to register a 4 cyl in Qld than a 6.
Same torque less cylinders.

Food for thought.

Trent.

I've got a 4 month old diesel SR5 manual and I LOVE IT!!!
I regularly get 7.7L/100km when driving to and from work, mainly back roads at 70km/h, few traffic lights but plenty of hills.
Drove to Bathurst last year not long after getting it and it did 10L/100km with a trailer on the back (sitting on 100/110 most of the way), which was better than my mates Diesel Auto D40 Navara which did 11L/100km without a trailer! :)
Weigh up the costs of petrol servicing, fuel costs, etc.
A few people have had problems with valve seat recession though after converting to gas...
Personally I'd stay away from converting to gas.

I hope this helps.
Cheers

Ive' got the SR5 Diesel Auto. I love it. I average 8-9l per 100km city driving. I just recently towed the ski boat from Brisbane to Grafton return. It's a 21' boat weighing aprox 1600kg. I averaged 12.1 on the way down and 11.9 on the way back. I drove on the speed limit 100-110 everywhere I could.
I'm driving Brisbane - Adelaide at the end of the month, towing the boat again. I'll let you know.

I have the Deisel and love it. Currently doing 9.5 ltr per hundred driving to and from work in Sydney. I have heaps of extras on the vehicle so everyday weight is around 2.3 tonne. Recently did a camping trip where I was carrying about 2.8 tonne and did 732 kms on the 76 litre tank.

I worked out thought that for there to be a cost saving though having deisel over petrol considering the extra cost of buying a deisel, the extra cost of deisel over petrol I need to keep the car for 5 years.

If you are using your truck for some rural activities, maybe the diesel due to the fuel rebate you can get. If you are likely to do any towing or carry heavy loads from time to time, go the diesel. they have surprising perforamance in my book and are nice to drive. (I have an auto SR 4 door). This is my first diesel rig. I average about 13 l/100 km constantly and was doing 10 L/100km in factory trim before I added weight and wind resisting accessories.

Actually the only car I can remember leaving me at the lights was a V8 turbo Landcruiser tray back...

Hey Twinturbo007 I have the xtra cab d4d SR5 and I love it. Its manual and i get between 9-10L-100km but I have noticed the computer show a reading as low as 7.6L-100km so idk... I have my ute registered to the family farm in a rural district it keep insurance lower and I get 40c in the $1.00 back compliments of Canberra. I also have a guaranteed $150 or less service plan not sure if all hiluxs get that or not. And all running costs can be covered if it is a farm/company car e.g. tires, service, general wear and tear repairs on the vehicle

Anyhoo if i was to go again id go a WHITE (not black like my current one) SR not SR5 xtra cab with a steel tray not the style side (it looks goot but not practical for a motorcross rider) After saying all this it is my first car and i love it to death and i will have it for a long time.

Cheers Sam
Yes this is my ute...... No i won't help you move house.

Stock V6 used to get 10lt/100 on a good highway trip. Now with 32s, bars, roofrack etc around 14-16lt/100. Got plenty of power and good torque. I originally got a petrol for lpg but wouldn't bother with it now I know more. 5sp auto is good. My GVM was 5230kg today towing a trailer full of bricks and I didn't know it was there.
