I discovered this problem, but I installed it myself. When fitting the longrange tank its a good idea to turn the bolt on the shackle the other way around.

It's done now of course, but I purchased the vehicle with the tank already fitted and the nut on the outside instead of in.

I see a lot of people recommending Koni shockies. I have had them before in a large car for a long time on country roads that are as rough as guts and I must say they offer a brilliant ride and their build quality is way up there amongst the 'best' category.

:o I just bought a set! Seems there is movement in the wrong directions. Either that or the weld was not penetrated around the bottom leg enough? Some close up pics of the broken weld where it broke may reveal what happened especially if the weld did not penetrate one of the surfaces. Another thought came to mind is horizontal movement of the lower control arm whilst the shock is compressing over and over. Perhaps the control arms and everything else lower could use urethane bushes to minimize movement? I just bought extra heavy duty springs to carry all the weight I'll be throwing up front. Now I have doubts as to if these shocks will handle those springs :( Kind of a worry.

If that shock was out of warranty, you could remove the rubber and mig weld it yourself I'd say.

I called a suspension shops today in Perth. Got a quote for new shocks, springs, bushes, installation and a wheel alignment (Front only):

King Spring ktfr-101 and TD adjustables = $1011
King Spring ktfr-101 and Billsteins = $ 978
King Spring ktfr-101 and Koni adjustables= $ 962

I Was suprised that the Koni were the cheapest. The guy stated that Koni gave the best ride for what i wanted (Weekend worrior and sometimes tourer). The Billies were his second preference and he said Koni were better as shocks soften in the first year, so you can adjust them to the original feel. But get this....$180 to remove and adjust!!!!

DAMN!

turns out the guys up here at Fulcrum are no good. messed me around a bit.

Got back onto cal this morning, had them pulled out in the shed by lunch time (on leave) and sent them direct to him.

He is commited to sorting it, and reminds all of us the Cal Off Road units are not the same as the standard 3 notch billies, they cater for the longer travel and the notches are a little higher.....
Bilstein will honour the warranty however there is a chance they will send you back the normal units...

Although he is a mate of mine, and there is a bit of bias here, he is good at what he does, he wil look to become a sponsor of the forum in this the new financial year.. and offer forum support to his product.

x2 Caloffroad rules. You cant go wrong when you get bilstein and then make them even better!

don't be mate, the latest billies out of Cal have only 2 grooves, forget the middle one and slightly further apart, the mono tube construction is slightly similar to that of the TRD construction.

i have these ones on no. 3 in your terms, even bilstein have said they have never seen it break at the mount, even with units running spacers, this case was due to poor welds...

just keep both your old shockers, you should anyway, just incase.....

either way mate, throw em up high, my case is more of a one off......

Re: inner CVs
I would cut the outer clip and slide them out about 10mm and use a slim style hose clip to clamp them down. The boot will chop through in no time. They don't handle touching, unlike the outers.
My wife say's I am not completely useless, I can serve as a bad example for others
