OME OR TJM???

OME OR TJM???

Postby davis.16 on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 9:34 +0000

I want to get a 2 inch lift on my new 08 sr5 xtra cab 4x4. i spoke to the guy at tjm but he seems to think anything over 2 inches in a suspension lift isnt legal in qld. is that true. and which brand is better TJM or OME??? i have had a quote of $2042.00 from tjm for a suspension kit fitted but have not made it to an arb store yet.

My ute isnt going to be doing huge amounts of off roading but we have a farm and there is a kind of goats track leading up the hill that needes to be driven along from time to time. however the ute is doing alot of road work. im new to this so any hel would be greatly appreciated

Cheers Sam :D :D :D :D
Yes this is my ute...... No i won't help you move house.

Sam

Have a search. Plenty of info. Some members have problems with sagging on the OME product, I went with Tough Dog. Dearer but TJM recommended it over their own stuff when pressed. Any of the kits will be legal. It is not the height of the lift but the alteratoin to suspension travel that is the legal limiting factor and this usually works out to be about 2". However when pressed QT themselves don't like to see more than 2 inches of lift.

davis.16 even if your doing mainly roadwork like you say i reckon after market suspension is still worth getting, sure you get a bit of lift and it works better off road but generaly you get a LOT better ride on road as well.

Gday Sam.
Just checked out your profile, get some pics up on it.
Love you line at the bottom.
"Love my truck"
A really good alternative rather than lift the suspension is fitting 31 inch tyres. They will work on stock suspension and will improve the offroad capability of your vehicle. A good set of A/t's will be a really great compromise and you will have some change left over. ( for more mods.......hehe) You could also fit some underbody protection like a TJM FUG and TUG with your change.
Shane and Rod are spot on the aftermarket suspension is far superior than standard even on the road.
My tyres were the first mod on my truck and the 31's are legal, give you a 25mm lift approx and will generally give you far superior grip and pucnture restistance over the Bridgestone Dueler as fitted standard.
Good luck and keep us posted with your mods. Couple of photos would be great as well.
Cheers

Skog's right mate, but once you add the bar work etc, you loose 25 mm clearance at least, so you will probably find you will need to lift it after adding 31's, that was my experience.

Hi davis.16,
I have not long joined this forum myself. Asked the same question basically. I have posted what I ended up with, but here it is again on a 2008 deisel dual cab, OME rear medium springs with koni heavy track shocks. King ktfr-101hd coils with bilstein shocks, all works great. This site has so much info it is hard to find the time to read it all.
In regards to the 31's, I think they were illegal in Qld due to max increase being 15mm. Have read on other sites that the QT were going to change on Jan 1/09 to ,come line with other states , to 50mm. Not sure if this has taken place, you may need to check QT site. Also in my research I could not find a 31 that met the std tyre requirements of 112s, may not be a problem for you. Good luck.
Cheers

OME and TJM are much a muchness.

We have had OME for the last 18 months and have not had any problems.

We have just been away in the far north of South Australia and did 2000 kilometers of high speed dirt driving with out an issue, very smooth, stable and compliant over the rough stuff.

Was going to use Koni or Bilstiens originally but if you break one somewhere out in the middle of nowhere it might be hard to get one overnight.

Our Hilux has a 2 inch lift plus another 1.5 inches from the rims and tyres.

Sam,

Love the way your truck is coming along, your stereo is an awsome install.

Good to get good advice, I personally like the combination eggylux has. I have some of what he has and similar for the rest so it has suited me well.

In saying that olcoolone has a very valid contribution, he has had no trouble and the parts are more likely to be sourced across the country.

Keep it going mate, you are going great.

I was told by TJM that their springs are supplied by king spring
I found this out after i had made the mistake of going OME now i have a dragster
The TJM HD ones use 18mm and free length of 375mm same as the King springs HD
Would go TJM over OME as that only use 16.5mm and the haven't coped with the weight
OME said the eyebrow height was around 765mm on all their examples they showed me rear around 810mm
Mine ended up front 725/730 rear 855/855 this is with the heavy springs
Then they said this was normal that no cars are the same they should have an idea then they showed me the figures of others all around the 730-740 mark
Remains to be seen weather they will fix or not
The problem with doin' nothing is that you never know when youre finished

Just curious , WHY , does no-one consider running Tough Dog  . I have had them in now for about 1 1/2 - 2 years , cant seem to fault it , no sag , no crap like you seem to get with OME .
Just my thoughts .

I was talking to Bilstein / King setup specialist installer and I mentioned to him about the sag issues a lot of guys are having with the OME setups, he said there is nothing wrong with the OME springs (all Aussie made in the same factory) the sag is due to incorrect spring selection not sag/ fatigue???

I am also looking for suspension setups in my truck, its just my two bobs worth but i had tjm/xgs fitted throughout my previous prado and was more than happy. I blew two front shocks up in the cape but that was after having them on for 4 years and in that time they definately earnt their keep. Even though they were out of warranty they sent a new set up free of charge and had a mechanic replace them also free of charge. Customer service and availability goes a long away when your off the beaten track.

Just put an EFS kit in the other day!

$1245 fitted and it's sitting pretty!! About 3 inches lift at this stage but will come down with a dual batt and Bar.

Kept original leaves in the back and added an extra leaf. Then were set to level out the ute. Performance is chalk and cheese compared to stock. Now have 31 " STT's as well.

Cheers, Broke

I'm with you Rockman. I like mine too, but the original TD comfort ride rear was far too soft. The adjustable shocks really make a difference. I think people get put off by the cost. They are the dearest of OME, TJM, EFS but even TJM say they are better than theirs.

I'd love to ad the in cab controls to them so I can change settings on the fly! One day

jack,

Your post here is fine.

Just don't multiple post the same question please.

If you don't get any answers to your post, just bump the same post again after a few days. Invariably, sometimes posts don't get answered by our other members. Be patient ........

I recommend you search 'tough dog' and see what results you get from the search engine.

I have deleted your other post.

Good luck.
Cheers
