Gidday guys, this is a work in progress. The strut is too strong at 100Newtons, the length is correct at 225mm.I set the hieght to my preference then bent the horizontal rod so the valve gave maximum breaking with the strut fully extended. Now I have to take the strut to the re-gasser to reduce the Newtons. He reckons he can do that easy, so we will see. Thanks TOMUCH for the idea.

Ah, 'Necessity is the mother of all invention' Gentlemen I applaud your thinking and the return of the bush mechanic in you all. A question though, has anyone raised this issue and this most important fix with their local Toyota dealer with regards to the legality as far as insurance, safety and warranty issues are concerned. If anyone else has an opinion I would be very interested in all of your thoughts. Especially in this day and age of 'no care and no responsibility'

dan,
i pondered this very question myself.
what are toyota going to say when they see that the brakes have been altered?
i think we are stuck in the middle to a certain extent, toyota doesnt want to know about the problem, arb wont want to know about it and if we try and fix it ourselves i think we could be opening a whole new can of worms...hmmm what to do???
everybody wants to blame each other so the dont have to fix it.

Macca,
Looking at your pictures, is your rod across the front straight?
When ARB installed my OME lift it looks as if they bent the "cross bar" such that from the valve it is horizontal, then about 2/3 along it bends down to the connecting rod. My brakes seem to be fine, and it means no changes to the connecting threaded rod.

I hear you Glen & Kaz, please consider that we know our own utes brakes are not 100% and then if we do nothing, we have to take some responsibility.
I for one will not drive knowing my brakes are not working, I will fix them and if someone has a problem with that ie Toyota RTA or Insurers they will have a battle on their hands.
Toyota have produced a vehicle with lousy brakes and hand brake for that matter, The aftermarket guys are not completing the installation if they do not reset the valve.
WTF mine was bent standard, I suggest you do the TOMUCH test as a minimum to put your mind at rest.
A local National Parks worker got squashed against a gate he was opening as the handbrake did not hold. We might see some action yet.

guys,
i have been procrastinating about this for the last 24 hours of what to do. should i fix it my self? should i try and get toyota to fix it? should i try and get arb to fix it?should i leave it? it has really been stressing me out a little.
i just was talking about it to my girlfriend and she has got some friends that own a mechanic shop that specialiases in brakes. so i am going to speak to them tomorrow and see what they have to say. it may confirm what we are already doing on here or may give a better way to fix the problem. i will keep you all informed of what they say...Glenn

Glen there is nothing better than good advice.
I have concerns with what I am trying.
Having the strut knocked off or getting full of sand etc and falling off will leave me with no rear brakes. I am really interested in your mates opinion, we have to keep in mind we did this mod and maybe have to do a little extra to make it perfect.
I can see why Toyota has no interest.
The suspension mobs are more than a little exposed IMHO.
To find I had no rear braking was a shock and that is why I started this.
