If you can get away with a 31 you still have to find something with a speed rating of S according to the placcard, is this correct? So far I have only spotted the bridgestone 604 and the General Grabber AT2

Alfy, not entirely true and may vary between states. In Qld the bible states off road vehicles must have a minimum speed rating of 140 Km per hour which is an N rating. If you read tyre the placcard carefully, you will note that you only need to run an S rating to increase the front axle load rating by about 45 kg above the standard. This is important for those of you who have a winch bar with a winch fitted as the front axle load will be at or a bit above the standard weight.

I am happy with the N rating on my car and if this also suits you and your state regs, you will have a much wider range to choose from. It would be highly unlikely that your car would be weighed to check axle weights by the constabulary or your insurer.

Great stuff steve.....she look good ;) :D

I like those wheels, they look tuffer in my opinion than the mags....

there used to be a tyre joint in melbourne that was selling those steel ones powder coated black at one stage, they looked good.

glad your happy mate.

are they MTZ's you put on?

Yeah Im happy with them too.. thanks for the 5th rim ..

Yeah they're the 31/10.5/15 Baja MTZs.. bit of a whine on freeway, but nothing to worry about..

the black rims would look good on your bus.. but silver works for me (Note i had to pull the rear bar off and the roof rack though to fit in the garage .. but now i think i 'may' be able to fit a 2" lift.. just have to do some more measuring while the missus isnt around ;)

mmaaxx wrote:Guys,

was doing some research on the Vicroads website, and thought Id find out if 31" tyres were legal or not as some of the forum members are concerned that they may not be given the +15mm diamter increase rule over stock.

So heres what i have found.......

According to Vicroads Vehicle Standards Information - May 2003 Guide to vehicle Modifications it states the following-
The overall diamter of any replacement wheel & tyre must not be:
- more than 15mm greater than largest diameter tyre specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series.

Therefore, the largest wheel and tyre combo in "the series" as quoted is the TRD Hilux's 265/65x17, which when worked out on that size equates to 77.63cm or 30.56 inches diamter.

So if we add 15mm to that size we get 79.13 or 31.15 inches diameter......see? it's legal! :D

In regards to increase track width, you can only only increase it by 25mm, so if we have the SR5 as the standard with a +30mm offset, then we can increase it by 12.5mm per side, which mean we legally cannot run a bigger (read space out further) offset than a +17.5mm.

hopefully that helps, now all you have to do is find a 31" tyre that fits the load rating requirements.

Umm an interesting point though max.. what you've said IS correct, however I think you've left out something important, and that is that the Tire and Rim Association book and the tyre modification rules state clearly that you are allowed an overall diameter increase of 15mm over the largest tyre option listed on the placard of the vehicle in question..

now i know that Nissan sells replacement tire placards for their vehicles.. does Toyota do the same so we can list the 265/65/17 as the standard ? if not then we have to abide by the placards on our vehicles..

Placard looks fine for a TRD as it states on bottom corner.
Now all you would need to do is convince others that your vehicle is a TRD just with a D4D donk

Yeah exactly.. thats the only problem with it.. and it lists the 2 x TRD models (4000S/4000SL)

I suppose you could always argue that they are the same models... dont know howd you go though

I got mine on monday aswell steve, Im gonna fit it next to the others and if anyone says anything, Im just gonna tell them that vicroads states the measurement be taken off the largest diamter tyre available for the hilux....and thats why the second placard is there...as proof. worth a shot.

rodw wrote:Biglux,

The Qld bible is a bit vague on hte top of page 11 on this link http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resourc ... icles2.pdf

That PDF isn't really the "bible" in Qld - the first sentence says "Please note: The contents of this publication are a guide only and cannot be used as a reference to a point of law. For a detailed explanation, refer to the Transport Operations
(Road Use Management - Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999."

Which says the cominbation of tyre and rim diameter must be "not more than 15mm more than the diameter
specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer" provided it is compliant with table 2 of ADR 23, which is the load index table. I know that's almost exactly what you wrote rod ;) except for the bit that says "specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer". The question is, specified by the vehicle's manufacturer for that specific model, or what? Keep in mind that the TRD Hilux has "re-tuned springs" and Bilstein dampers (from the TRD Hilux brochure).

Spoke to a guy at Qld Transport today and the call dropped out as I was about to ask him if we could add the 15mm to the TRD Hilux wheel/tyre size. Prior to that he had said that if you got something in writing from the manufacturer saying that the tyre size you want to run is ok, it would be legal. Anyone want to write to Toyota and ask them if it's ok to run TRD Hilux wheels/tyres on an SR or SR5?
