32x11.5R15

Need something to get you rolling?

32x11.5R15

Postby Zantus on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 3:55 +0000

I've searched and searched and didn't find any definate answers, so sorry if this is a repost.

I'm looking at getting a 3.0D4D Single Cab 4x4, which comes with 15" Alloy wheels here in South Africa.

I'd like to keep the factory wheels, but I'll need a bigger tyres, since my current SFA hilux sits on 35's

What do I need to do beyond the OME lift I'll be fitting, to make the 32x11.5 tyre fit?

I know it will be easier to fit a 265/65R16 and still get the height, but I'd like to know how to make the 32x11.5R15 fit.

Also is there anyone out there with this size tyre that can post a picture or 2 of what it looks like?

From what I remember, there is a member here that has 32/11.5x15 muddies on sr5 15x7 rims.....

id suggest spending some time and searching the "SEARCH" function to try and find it.

Not sure if he was lifted, but the 32.11.5 on the sr5 rim sits just under the upper control arm, which is why it allows for the little bit of extra width the 11.5 gives ya.

I think ideally a small lift and mudflap removal would do it.

You will probably have to remove the mud flaps, and if you can't get them to fit with the standard tims then get a set with a different offset. I can't remember exactly, but go a more negative offset I think.

Here is the thread Max refers to for this size tyre on standard SR5 rims:
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2085&p=24048
However, over here the standard 7" rim is too narrow for the 11.5" tyre and hence it is illegal to fit this tyre on a 7" rim. You would need to use an 8" rim.

Pretty sure our Tyre and rim regulations are beased on international standards so it probaby means they will be illegal in your country too.

There are a couple of 32x9.5 or 33x10.5 tyres around which would be legal and should fit under the guards. However, I am pretty sure these tyres are bias ply rather than radials (eg. Swampers and the like). One of these days, I might just be tempted to try a 33x10.5 Swamper to keep Mmaaxx happy!

Rim widths are not a problem here, you can put whatever tyre you want on whatever rim you want. On my last 3 4x4's I had tyres that were 4" wider than the rims and it worked very well to prevent debeading at very low pressures.
A local tyre expert who's been 4x4ing for about 30 years, even suggested I go for 7" rim for the 35x12.5 tyres on my SFA hilux, because that is what he's been doing for years without any issues.

In enough strife with the missus any day of the week. Would be thinking about it harder if wan't planning the Kimberley's trip next year. Frightening how much more to spend on the Rig before it is ready to go. Ron Moon says in that country the bias ply is more reliable and less prone to puncture and ripped sidewalls than radials.

So should I buy 6 Swampers for an 8,000 km trip or just one 31x10.5 radial to give me a full set with 2 spares? Could you imagine how much strife I'd be in by the time we did 8,000 bone jarring, whining km with the missus on Swampers? One good thing about the Swampers though I wouldn't be able to hear her whining over the howl of the tyres until after I got home!

yeah, but you could use the swampers when you get back....once she's in the middle of nowhere, where she gonna go to complain?

go the swampers, on a serious note, you cannot compromise safety as you would know in the outback....its a big land and the next car that drives by you with the potential to help you out may be a couple of days away.

just tell her the rocks will shred all the tyres on the market except the swampers.

she's not that switched on about fourby's and tyres is she?

(no disrespect of course)

I would have removed the mudflaps in any way, because that is usually one of the first things I stuff up offroad.

Zantus, hope you got the info you need now seeing Mmaaxx and I sort of hijacked this thread

Mmaaxx, Well you got a point there, might have to swing by Ryano and the boys on the way to work tomorrow! 4 weeks of howling tyres and whining wife might be hard to take, but might be worth it in the end.

I do the tyre shopping and even get her tyres at Fourbys so I might actually get away with it

I did the Kimberly's on 265/75 BFG's this year and just took a 750/16 as an extra sprare but didn't need it
so for the amount of highway and graded dirt roads you would be far better of on radials imho.

Also you can buy tyres in some pretty remote places now even Drysdale station has a good range
of tyres ;)

Sorry for the hi jack Zantus

from what I understand yes.....on the 15x7 sr5 wheels.... the diameter of the tyre just sits underneath the base of the coil on the strut housing.....any taller and it would hit. you'd have to search through the profiles/shed to see which member is using that setup.

it looks good thou :D

i tried a set of goodyear wranglers in 32's on sr5 rims and there wasnt much clearance from the UCA couldnt even get passed my knuckle when i stuck my hand in there even with a 2" lift but normal driving it would most probably be alright, its when you atrt to articulate i would say is when the rubbing would start.

I run 32/11.5x15 on my standard rims with standard suspension and have no rubbing except for the front mud flaps. I have had the suspension fully compressed on all corners with no problems.
There is about 10mm between the upper control arm and the inside of the tyre. even aired down they dont look like ever rubbing.

Looking at what you wrote above, a 10mm gap between the UCA and edge of the tyre means a 20mm overall diameter tyre would be the limit before it touches.

Then again if you reduce the size to a 10.5 inch tyre, that half an inch extra clearance each side, meaning 12.5mm extra clearance.

So, thinking out aloud here guys) I reckon a 33/10.5x15 BFG tyre, either AT or MT would miss the edge of the UCA with a few mm to spare.

You listening ROD ? I know you want to do this LOL  get that tape measure out and start measuring. :P
