Gjohnson - That a good looking Tyre and rim combo, when you say the MTZ'z aren't much nosier that the BFG At's how much difference is there? I have the OME Lift as well so I do not expect any rubbing issues

DonnersV6 - Do you know what sort of economy you get with the 32's, I currently get 14 litres/100kms

The most kms I have done on 1 tank is about 540kms. But that was very easy driving. I average between 450 to 500 kms.

Hope that helps

That sound good, very similar to what I get now.

Did you allow for the speedo being out with the larger tyres?

Stoney,
They are louder dont get me wrong, you can definately hear a difference but it isnt as bad as I was led to believe. They are the quietest mud terrain I have heard. Better than Maxxis or BFG MT's as far as noise goes. In my opinion anyway.
Cheers Greg.

gjohnson, I was considering getting cooper STT's until I went from a drive in my mates Hilux (previous shape) and they were fairly loud and at around 80km/hr they sound like an old DC3 taking off.

It would be good if there was some sort of noise rating like - "1" Highway Tyre, "5" Allterrian tyre, "10" a big knobby mud tyre. Then we could make an educated opinion.

Donners, if you factor in the speedo error you are getting pretty good milage.

Thank guys,
Carl

V6 and Bigger Tyres

I have a manual V6 'Lux with 32" PirelliScorpion AT's for street and a set of 32" Goodyear MTR's for offroad. I get between 15.5L/100km and 17.5L/100km depending on the amount of loud pedal I am using.

Torque is decreased, very noticeable offroad. But I still want to go bigger! Braking is also not great, but I am fixing this with DBA Cross Drilled & Slotted rotors and some custom made brake pads. Have finally arrived and ae getting fitted on Tuesday. Will take some photos and post.

Go the 32's, not too much differenceto the 31's.

Oh yeh, and the speedo is out about 10%.

Brett,

Was at ARB on Saturday looking at the new design Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 Rib, in the 32's. I think they would look great with a set of Black steelies.

If the speedo is out by 10% did you factor that error in for fuel usage? If not you are still getting about what I am now.

31inch tyres & rubbing somewhere

Postby david allan on Mon, 07 Jul 2008 8:21 +0000

hi guys.
Wonder if you guys can help me.
Since i fitted the 31's on my truck i have noticed a weird rubbing sound.

It only occurs when you are driving at high speeds, say 100km and over.

It occurs for a split second & varies from occuring very often to not occuring for a while.
It sounds like something is touching/grabbing for a split second.

I thought it could be the mud flaps.
I checked the front ones & there does seem to be a a little mark right in the middle of the bottom edge of the flaps. I also checked the rear ones & they also have the same mark.

Has anyone experienced this.
Is it the mud flaps or should i be looking at something else.
thanks guys

at 100 ks wouldn't the mud flaps be pushed back? I've only had rubbing at the front on full lock and suspension travel like turning into a driveway..

David.
It could be the front underguard being blown back onto the tyre at speed. You are running the ARB bar and they simply use an angle grinder the cut the guard and slot it under the new protective panelling. Otherwise there is a rubber dirt/ stone guard towards the back of the strut that could be flapping about in the breeze mine fell of on the Oxley trip as a result of water pressure and was flapping about and as a result thought my RHS wheel was throwing its tread and about to fail. Pulled over twice to look and would only flap about at +100 clicks.

31inch tyres & rubbing somewhere

Postby Glenn k on Mon, 07 Jul 2008 8:40 +0000

david,
it wouldnt be the mudflaps. as hissan said, the mudflaps would be pushed back away from the tyres.
i have the same suspension and tyre size as you and have had no rubbing what so ever. not even close to rubbing.
not really sure what it could be but i dont think it would be the tyres or the mudflaps(unless one is loose and flapping around). if you are doing 100 km or more when it is doing it, your wheel would be pointing pretty straight, so it couldnt really scrub on anything.
try checking around the inner guards and see if anything has come loose, maybe something is flapping around at high speed...hope this helps ya

I have also had on my previous 04 hilux the inner soft rubber flab come away at one point and would create a flapping / rubbing sound at speed. I have 31's on and only get some rubbing in certain situations (compressed suspension) and it is at near full lock - tyre corner on mudflap.

i agree with you that it makes sense that the mud flaps should be pushed back at high speeds.
But was thinking that the tyres rotating at high speed could pull the mud flaps closer, dont know just a thought.
I dont get rubbing at all on full lock

skog
yeah you are probably right regarding the guard from when ARB cut it.
I will have to go through the whole underguard & make sure its all tight again. Also the same with the peice of rubber, will have to check it again.
I actually did check it all today coz i also thought the same thing. The inner guard under the bar is abit loose but couldnt see it flaping into the wheel.
It seems to be wedged under the protector plate.
Its the same with the small peice of rubber, its all attached aswell.
But I will go through it again, just to make sure
skog, did you just use cable ties to tie everything up?

The strange thing is that it has only started to happen when i put the larger tyres on. Doesn't make sense.
Could it be something else, something in the suspension touching the rubber?, or should i look at something else

I am second vote for the front underguard. This used to drive me mad until I reworked the front underguard. I trimmed it a little more and made sure it stays in front of the lower guard panels on the ARB bar.

same also having the underguard issue rubbing on the left hand (passenger side).

may have been more so after going through a water crossing which i think has loosened or poped one of the guard thigns off.
