31inch tyres & rubbing somewhere

Need something to get you rolling?

Tyres 32/11.5/15

Postby redbeard on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 8:25 +0000

Ok, I bit the bullet and bought new tyres.
With load rating, tyre size etc I decided to go a bit bigger rather than sacrifice load rating. I went for BFG AT 32x11.5 R15 on the original SR5 rims. I have them on now and havent had a single rub at all. They fill up a LOT of the wheel well. I went bouncing over some gutters and stuff at work and still didnt. It will be interesting when I hit the bush. AND I still have standard suspension. I am not garenteeing this for anyone else, dont get me wrong. But it works on mine.

What would be the largest tyre size that would fit with a 2" lift?

would be interested to knwo how much clearance you have between the tyre and the edge of the upper control arm, I reckon it'd be almost touching would it not?

any chance of a pic?

V6 and Bigger Tyres

Postby StoneySR05 on Sun, 22 Jun 2008 7:20 +0000

G'Day All,

I am still d*^king about trying to make up my mind what size tyres to get.

There is always a lot of talk about how bigger tyres affect the diesels but there is rarly much said about the petrol, can any one with V6 Petrol help me with the following question?
* What size tyre are you running
* What change did it have to performance and economy
* Are you Auto or Manual

This is my requirements,
* I don't want to increase economy by too much
* I really like the way the car tows my boat along the highway and I don't want to turn my Hilux into a slug.
* I want to keep up with the Jones's by running bigger tyres, 32's

Thanks :-)

V6 and Bigger Tyres

Postby nastie on Sun, 22 Jun 2008 9:23 +0000

I have the V6 Auto.
Previously I had 33's the standard drive train and motor, did not have a problem with turning these tyres and actually performs very well.
The only modification really was to put a tranny cooler just as a preventative measure more than anything.
I now have 35's on my lux and have changed the diff ratios to 4.11's. The standard drive train would have been ok, but it was easier and simpler to change the ratios when I did rater than rooting around later.
My fuel economy wasn't affected too much either when running the 33's or 35's. Average around town was about 14.2L/100kms in the 33's. I haven't done much driving with the 35's so can't give you much info there.

Hope this answers your questions.

Also be aware of the discussions on the forum regarding brake performance as bigger tyres etc have a negative impact on brake performance.

drew66 - pretty sure 31's are way past legal in Qld. 15mm bigger than stock is the rule!

True,
Dont think anyone would mind a little over (besides, I think they had passenger cars in mind with the 15mm thing)

I have the 32s on mine and no problems going forward. Stopping my progress has been changed a bit though. I tend to find myself on the brakes a little earlier but not any harder. The speedo is out a bit now.
Went out to Toolangi on the weekend and bounced up a few hills without a drama. Certainly didnt feel any more stressed than usual.

going by your profile it says ARB suspension lift, so Im assuming its bout 40mm, yeah? I reckon go the 265/75x16's mate, you'll gain half an inch more clearance offroad, might be that half inch that decides whether you get stuck over that one obstacle or not.

up to you at the end of the day.

I have the 265/ 75 x 16's BF All Terrains, Mate goes great, but then again I bought mine with the wheels and tyres already on, So I couldn't tell you if it was any better or not. I can tell you that with a ute full of tools and a mates big V8 ski boat, it towed beautifully. The only thing I did change after that day was put Air jacks in. Steering was a bit light.

I just put Mickey Thompson MTZ 265/75/16 on my V6. They have a 55mm bigger diameter so that means over 1 inch more clearance. I have the ARB front lift and no scrubbing. Will let you know how the fuel goes. Not that much noisier than the BFG AT's they replaced either.
