Squealing noise after extended driving

PostPosted: Tue, 23 Sep 2014 9:14 +0000

Hi guys been getting a squealing noise from maybe the centre or front underneath hard to tell seems to be more noticeable at low speeds 30-70 kph doesn't seem to change with clutch or braking
Only happens after about 45 -60 mins of highway driving
The mechanic has looked twice and I even brought it in after long driving when it was happening they checked bearings and said was fine.
He said a front strut was leaking and that may be the problem I've since replaced suspension and it is still happening
2008 diesel sr manual dual cab 4x4
Any ideas what it is would be great thanks

That a strange one.
If the have already checked wheel bearings, it doesn't change with the clutch in or out and it's obviously across a wide gear range (30-70kmh) about the only thing left is centre bearing and uni joints. Although I've never heard of them squealing after a long drive?

My brother had the same sort of problem ended up being the arb bar rubbing on something.
Check that if you have one.

Dont no any help would be appreciated

well my bearings are sweet and the noise actually disappeared for a few months, but its back again :\ constant noise till i slow down to about 30-35 kms and it stops instantly. definetely not brakes tires rims theyre all new, and my bearings i been told are fine. not particularly bothered but kinda annoying esp when i dont know whats causing it !

sorry for the resurrect but im having a similar thing on mine. its been occuring for about a year now - im writing this post more to blog my experience for the sake of others, but would welcome ideas

car: 2009 SR D4D dualcab diesel
high pitched rythmic squeal. sounds like metal on metal with dirt inbetween
rythm is synced to road speed - not revs
source is dominant on left hand side, and appears to be coming from left hub, but as ive only been able to test with car moving, (and the fact the front diff is offset to the left)

only occurs in speed range 5kmh - 40kmh
much more likely in hot weather or extended driving (read: it needs temperature)
on the above point, i had a situation driving to albany and when i stopped at Williams for fuel, the weather was warm, with warm air, and the sound was really loud, yet by the time i got to albany where the air was cold, the noise had gone.
if i go to carwash with an underbody spray, it disappears for up to an hour (or the next drive).

so far, based on other squeaks ive found caused by dirt getting in between metal (rhino pioneer rack, tailgate latch), and fixing with the tiniest bit of lubricant, i feel its dirt from driving through mud that has got somewhere. ergo - i dont think its serious. its just embarrassing.

ive pulled the hub off and greased the metal cover on the cv which fits there coz i first suspected that. plus greased the spacers that exist on non-abs models still there. when i pulled the hub off i could see evidence of rust getting to that hub a little where as the RHS hub was fine. i wont try explain the rust look/locations - ill prob just take the hub off again some time, inspect it better, take more pics, apply more grease.

Mine's been doing it for years. :D
Same frequency as a wheel, too slow for a uni or centre bearing.

Sprayed some 5-56 around the driver's side CV boots, at the ends where it rotates against the fixed housings of the wheel hub and diff housing.
Noise gone !!! That was 2 weeks ago. Probably come back but at least I know what it is. Not sure which end was doing it.

Clampy have you found a solution to this? i have practically the same thing. i have a 2013 toyota hilux SR and would love to give this annoying squeak the flick!
thanks

Bah mine does this as well. It's a 2011 SR dual cab diesel (doesn't apply to SR5???) and it does it after driving for 10 minutes when I'm slowing from around 45 down to 5 km/hr. Clutch has no effect nor engine revs, only speed. I've greased a few drive line bits and see how it goes, tis bloody annoying.

2011 DC SR Hilux;

Same symptoms, bearing noise coming from what seems to be the drive shaft after a period of driving, normally 15-20 minutes of +60km/h speeds, speed of sound doesn't change from 70-20km/h, no change with clutch in or out, noise through all gears. Sound stops below 15km/h

Going in to get the carrier bearing done tomorrow hopefully that fixes it, if not it will be time to look at the diff.

Will update if problem is solved .
